Samsung Galaxy S5

It looks like Samsung is following in the footsteps of the iPhone 5S and HTC One and giving its Galaxy S5 phone the metal case treatment.

That's according to a report in the Taipei Times, which said analysts at Barclays Capital Securities Taiwan Ltd were expecting smartphone orders early next year for Catcher Technology Co, which makes the metal casings for Apple's MacBook Air notebook and the iPad mini tablet.

"The new orders will be for Apple's new iPhone 5S and Samsung Electronics Co's premium Galaxy series during the first half of next year," the report said.

This is a prediction worth taking seriously as Samsung tends to make announcements around its smartphone devices around the April/May time.

It's likely that a new metal option would get a good reception from  Samsung fans as the brand has been criticised for the cheap look and feel of the plastic used in its Galaxy range up until now.

The soft leather-like backing fabric and stitch detail on the Note 3 went down well with critics and embracing the metal could capitalise on that corner of the market that wants a more premium look and feel.

Predictions are that the S5 will be launching as early as Q1 in 2014 and it's expected to run on Android 4.4 KitKat, although Samsung could opt for the new Tizen OS.

Other rumors circulating on the specs front include a 5.3-inch OLED YOUM flexible display and 2Ghz Exynos 5 Octa core processor.

Sony Xperia Z1 mini compared with Xperia Z1 in new leaked image

The Sony Xperia Z1 mini is no stranger to leaks at this point. Another image leak has surfaced and this time we see the alleged Xperia Z1 mini sitting alongside the company's latest flagship, the Xperia Z1. While both the Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 mini look very similar in design, there is a major difference in the size.
The images come by way of the Chinese forum, Digi-wo that notes some of the specifications of the alleged Xperia mini Z1 which have been already leaked. The site also notes that the Sony Xperia Z1 mini can be launched at the CES 2014. The company unveiled the Xperia Z at CES 2013.

However, the Japanese major has not yet revealed its plan for the smaller-sized version of its flagship smartphone.

Earlier, the Sony Xperia Z1 mini's purported leaked image had also appeared on Chinese forum, Digi-Wo. The image revealed the front panel with Sony branding on top beneath the earpiece. The design of the leaked front panel of the alleged Xperia Z1 mini was visibly different from the Xperia smartphones launched until now. The phone appeared to have a rectangular body with no curved edges. The leak did not include any details about the internals of the device; however, previous rumours did reveal some specifications.

The Sony Xperia Z1 mini is rumoured to come with a 4.3-inch Triluminos 720p display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. The Z1 mini is also said to sport a 2400mAh battery, as well as support for a microSD card.

Interestingly, the Xperia Z1 mini is expected to ship with the same 20.7-megapixel camera as the Xperia Z1, one of the recently unveiled flagship's major highlights.

iPhone 5s Features 64-bit A7 chip, All-New 8 Megapixel iSight Camera with True Tone Flash & Introduces Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor

CUPERTINO, California—September 10, 2013—Apple® today announced iPhone® 5s, the most forward-thinking iPhone yet, featuring an all-new A7 chip, making iPhone 5s the world’s first smartphone with 64-bit desktop-class architecture for blazing fast performance in the palm of your hand. iPhone 5s redefines the best smartphone experience in the world with amazing new features all packed into a remarkable thin and light design, including an all-new 8 megapixel iSight® camera with True Tone flash and introducing Touch ID™, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your phone with just the touch of a finger. iPhone 5s comes with iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, engineered for 64-bit technology and featuring hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop®, enhanced Photos, Safari®, Siri® and iTunes Radio℠.

“iPhone 5s is the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world, delivering desktop class architecture in the palm of your hand,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5s sets a new standard for smartphones, packed into its beautiful and refined design are breakthrough features that really matter to people, like Touch ID, a simple and secure way to unlock your phone with just a touch of your finger."

The all-new A7 chip in iPhone 5s brings 64-bit desktop-class architecture to a smartphone for the first time. With up to twice the CPU and graphics performance, almost everything you do on iPhone 5s is faster and better than ever, from launching apps and editing photos to playing graphic-intensive games—all while delivering great battery life. Apple also engineered iOS 7 and all the built-in apps to maximize the performance of the A7 chip. iPhone 5s is the best mobile gaming device with access to hundreds of thousands of games from the App Store℠, the A7 chip’s 64-bit architecture and support for OpenGL ES version 3.0. iPhone 5s delivers incredibly rich and complex visual effects, previously only possible on Macs, PCs and gaming consoles.

Every iPhone 5s includes the new M7 motion coprocessor that gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency. Developers can also access new CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M7, so they can create even better fitness and activity apps that go well beyond what other mobile devices offer. The M7 motion coprocessor continuously measures your motion data, even when the device is asleep, and saves battery life for pedometer or other fitness apps that use the accelerometer all day.

iPhone 5s introduces Touch ID, an innovative way to simply and securely unlock your iPhone with just the touch of a finger. Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high-resolution image of your fingerprint and intelligently analyze it to provide accurate readings from any angle. Setting up Touch ID to recognize your fingerprint is easy, and every time you use it, it gets better. The Touch ID sensor recognizes the touch of a finger so the sensor is only activated when needed, preserving battery life. All fingerprint information is encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip on the iPhone 5s; it’s never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud®. Touch ID can also be used as a secure way to approve purchases from the iTunes Store®, App Store or iBooks Store℠.

iPhone 5s makes it even easier to take great photos with the world’s most popular camera. The all-new 8 megapixel iSight camera features a larger f/2.2 aperture and a new, larger sensor with 1.5μ pixels for better sensitivity and low-light performance, resulting in better pictures. These improvements, along with the Apple-designed image signal processor in the A7 chip and the new Camera app in iOS 7, provide up to two-times faster auto-focus, faster photo capture, automatic image and video stabilization, and better dynamic range. iPhone 5s introduces the new True Tone flash—the world’s first for any camera—that variably adjusts color and intensity for over 1,000 combinations, so photos taken with a flash appear more natural. iPhone 5s also includes a new Burst Mode, Slo-Mo video with 120 fps, a new FaceTime® HD camera for better low-light performance and audio-only FaceTime calls with iOS 7.

iPhone 5s features a remarkable thin and light, precision-crafted design that customers around the world love, including an anodized aluminum body with diamond cut chamfered edges, a stunning 4-inch Retina® display and glass inlays. iPhone 5s is available in three gorgeous metallic finishes including gold, silver and space gray. To complement iPhone 5s, Apple designed premium leather cases in six rich colors—beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and (RED)—with soft, color-matched microfiber lining.

iPhone 5s makes it even easier to connect to high-speed networks with support for up to 13 LTE¹ wireless bands, more than any other smartphone in the world. With download speeds up to 100 Mbps², you can browse, download and stream content even faster. iPhone 5s includes dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi support for up to 150 Mbps² and Bluetooth 4.0. iPhone 5s delivers an amazing 10 hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi and LTE networks and up to 8 hours on 3G networks, and up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback.³

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Samsung once again throws the floodgates to a gazillion devices open by unveiling the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 at the ongoing IFA 2013 event at Berlin, Germany, and this time around, the 2014 edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 will bring even more goodies to the table. For starters, the 10” display will be candy to your eyes as it features a WQXGA Super clear LCD (2560×1600) resolution, which will be accompanied by an octa-core 1.9GHz processor (this is only for the 3G or WiFi-only version), with 3GB RAM to boot. All of those improvements have been introduced without adding in extra bulk to the form factor.

Boasting four times the pixel density of the original Galaxy Note 10.1, this latest 2014 model would deliver a premium content viewing experience. Not only that, it comes with a magazine style user interface so that you are able to organize your favorite resources in an easy to use dashboard, before accessing that particular content for a stylish reading experience. It does not matter whether you are viewing videos or reading magazines and e-books, the new Galaxy Note 10.1 will be able to deliver an immersive media consumption experience.

Other than that, new design characteristics such as a warm and textured back cover with stitching have been thrown into the mix in order to inspire a sense of elegance and sophistication. Multi-taskers will also fall in love with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, where it sports Multi Window so that one is able to run separate instances of the same application, all the while using the enhanced S Pen in order to drag and drop content from one window to another.

The Pen Window would allow you to simply draw a window of any size on the screen, while being able to instantly access unique in-application features including YouTube or calculator. Theoretically speaking, once you have the 2014 edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, your productivity ought to shoot through the roof.

There will be three connectivity options available – WiFi Only, WiFi and 3G, WiFi and LTE, where it will come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities with a microSD memory card slot. It will arrive in two color options of Jet Black and Classic White, and while pricing details have yet to be determined, we should see it hit retail stores from Q3 onwards.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook

So Apple might have inadvertently kicked off the Ultrabook trend without knowing it by launching their MacBook Air which captured the imagination of millions for many years. Well, Intel responded with a list of hardware specifications that an Ultrabook needs to conform to, although there are some computer manufacturers who do skirt around that list with the bare minimum specifications, and they end up looking like regular notebooks instead of the now signature slim look found in majority of the Ultrabooks out there. Sony’s latest attempt will definitely not fall short of expectations, with the announcement of the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook.

For starters, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will merge innovative hardware designs with rich touch experiences that are powered by Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 8 (which is still unreleased by the way). The highly versatile Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook is said to be able to transform just about instantly between a power-packed Ultrabook and a multi-media tablet with scratch-resistant glass. Hmmm, is it me, or are computer manufacturers starting to work on hybrid devices that offer flexibility in view of the work or play situation at hand?

The Sony VAIO Duo 11 Ultrabook will boast of a durable Surf Slider mechanism that will allow you to switch smoothly between keyboard and tablet, delivering a dual functioning computing experience. Tipping the scales at approximately 2.84 lbs. while boasting of an 11.6-inch display, the VAIO Duo 11 will also be accompanied by a pressure-sensitive digitizer stylus which delivers an expressive feel of natural handwriting directly on the touchscreen. You will be able to swap pen tips, depending on your current needs, for a firmer or softer writing feel. Sony claims that the digitizer stylus is ideal for writing, sketching and interacting with media and applications on the bright, detail-packed Full HD touchscreen.

Other hardware specifications include an LCD display and a backlit keyboard, the latest generation of Intel Core processors, full functional I/O port connectivity and Sony’s unique Sheet Battery technology. However, the color options are extremely limited – you will have to settle for black only, where prices start from $1,099.99 upwards depending on the hardware configuration.
